My busiest submission month to date.  Everything happening at once.  I

have a feeling things are coming down.  Finished the pact.  I heartily

object to the whining in the update, simply because if I had put that in

any  of my updates,  I would be thoroughly chastised for it. Things are

bad all around.  What do you want me to do about it? What can I do?  I

send out  as  much fucking things as I can afford.  I'm writing to my

on how to refine my submission procedure because the way it is,

I'm having trouble keeping track of everything. Tally-Ho.

UPDATE FOR THE MONTH OF JULY,1986

Since my last update was about two weeks ago, there's not much to

report.

The following places rejected our work:

STAR TRECK PARAPHERNALIA

Exquisite Corpse- no comment

Bellinham Review - only reads Sept-May

BORING CLASS

Exquisite Corpse- no comment

Denver Quarterly- reads only between sept-may

*Heard back from both University of Utah and  University  of

Colorado. They cannot publish plays.

*Submitted about thirty different bitch letters, including one to

the Dramatists Guild. Shit should hit the fan soon on this one.

*Sent rabid bat into Matt's apartment.

*Currently working on play outline for Murder in the Men's Store.

I'm procrastinating some, but plan to finish it this last week in

July (first draft).

*Had two more copies of Small Town made up.

*Sent one to Perry Shepard, Painted Word,

401 So. 400W., Salt Lake City, UT 84101

I think we have a good chance with this guy

because he is looking for original material,

and is just really starting up. He sounds OK on the

phone also. Doesn't sound gay, so he probably won't like

     Matt.

*Sent the other copy (obviously) to Actor's outlet theatre.

Will try to send 2-3 copies/month out of Small Town, just

going down my list. I will exhaust my list in about 1 year.

     ETC=1year (Estimated Time to Completion)

*Haven't heard  back  from  any Salt Lake   theatre.  I'm

     optimistic, though.

*Sent MATT $15.00 this month. $5.00 was for my monthly stamp fee,

and  $10.00 was for The Dramatists Bible.  So you two haggle over

how  you're going to come up with the rest of the  money (unless

you think I should give more.).

*Sending Matt $5.00 enclosed in his play update letter for  my

monthly stamp fee and trust fund.

Small Town sent to (9/18/86):

     Jack Essex Productions

     Ferndale Repertory Theatre

     Pioneer Memorial Theatre (Salt Lake)

Haven't gotten a single copy of Small Town back. I hope they all

get  produced because I dread the day when 2000 copies end up  on

my doorstep.

Haven't  gotten anything else back except my own  personal

writings.  Finally getting 'Night Watchman' published by Mind  in

Motion.

I don't have anything else to report. I'm in the middle of Murder

in the Men's Store, and I gotta get back to it.

I assume that I still have to send a book of stamps each month. I

forgot last month, so I've enclosed two.  Sorry. Our play policy

changes so quickly, it's hard for the Salt Lake branch to keep up

sometimes.

UPDATE FOR OCTOBER, 1986 A.D.

The  most notable achievement of this month was finishing  Murder

in the Mens' Store. I think we can learn from this play as to how

to do some things right. God knows we've done enough to know how

to do things wrong.  We clicked on this play, and this was due to

several factors:

Mike trusted me.  I can't tell you guys how much this helped and

how much I'm grateful for this.  We're all great writers as  well

as adults, and we should be responsible for ourselves. This trust

has  shown me that Mike is working towards 'psychic equality'  on

his end.

We communicated and set a unified direction for our play,  before

we started.  Many times I wanted to fall back into habit and hide

things from him, hoping he wouldn't notice what I was doing until

a  draft was  in  his hands and then it would be too  late. I

realized how stupid this was.  With two or three writers we  have

to pull in the same direction. You see what two people can  do

pulling in the same direction, and I think our results would  be

incredible if we can become unified on at least one play.

I trusted Mike and didn't get bogged down in detail. If you look

at the draft I did initially, and the final draft, you'll see

massive  changes.  Usually I balk, but I didn't really care that

much this time when I realized how good the play actually is. The

overall picture didn't change, so details didn't matter.

Well I know we can get it together,  and WE NEED YOU MATT. PLEASE

CALL HOME, YOUR WRITING PARTNERS ARE WORRIED. I think the success

of Cedar Chips shows that Matt is the equal of any  of  us, al

though I think it proves it to Matt more than anyone. We never

had doubts.

Well this month was a busy month for me.

*Dramatists Guild letter

I sent out  another 5  of  these letters  to  dramatists

magazines. They might not accept it, since I assume some of them

read the quarterly, but it's worth some exposure.  I still have

lots of the letters out. Unfortunately, I sent it  out as a

letter,  with  no return envelope (I've corrected this since) and

if they don't publish it,  I'm sure they just  throw it away.

That's ok. We got what we wanted out of it.

*Sign of the Times, Goofus--short story, etc.

*Poet's  Corner, Green  Feather,  Unknowns--Three poems  to  be

published (1987).

*Sent  out about 70 submissions of poems.  It was a lot of work,

but it has already paid off. It does good for ego-boosting, and I

would recommend Matt, that you try it. You can get addresses from

me and spike of the ones who are nice to us.

*Sent  out Star Trek paraphernalia to 5 places,  which I included

in Spike's  copy of the update. Security Check  (the  magazine

devoted  to  Chekov) and In a Different Reality still have the

paraphernalia. I  still have faith that we'll get some  of  this

crap published.

*Finished  Skeptical Inquirer article and sent that off. I  have

faith that old Kendrick Frazier will treat us right.

*Started MIB ideas.

*Sent  out total of 5 copies of Murder.  Will wait for January to

swamp the market to allow time for the contests to complete.

Acting Group - moved. Looked shady.

     Actor's space - same.

back.

*Graciously copied a play I had no part in.

Well I've been one busy bee this month. I have a proposal for

matt:

Matt, since you're not going to be writing with either spike

or me for awhile, certainly not playwrighting for quite awhile,

how  would you like to work on The Pact for the next six  months

and get a first draft out? You can do basically anything you want

with it,  change  title if you want,  and I'll even defer first

credit (if you get a first draft out,  that is.).  You'll have a

play with your name first, with plenty of time to mull over. You

can build your confidence, and we can get some preliminary bonds

established between us. It waould be easier on this than on a new

play,  and since a draft exists, you would have something to work

for. Let me know.

I'm pleased  with how things are going.  I know losing the

contest  was tough, but it wasn't my play, so what  the fuck.

Anyway, it looks good on the resume.
